I hope this question isn't too similar to the one below.

"The Equity characteristic makes a character want everything to work fair and square."

"A character with this trait(Inequity) will spot trouble before anyone else, but he will also never be satisfied unless absolutely everything is worked out."

Both of these traits seem to deal with the same thing: fixing inequities. How exactly are they different? Is a character with the Equity characteristic blind to inequities?

Equity is all about balance and fairness. Inequity is all about imbalance and unfairness.

Stories are about inequities (imbalances), which somewhat confuses the issue.

So, let's look at examples of Equity and Inequity as the Overall Story Problem:

Equity as the OS Problem:

  • A king has three sons, each of whom he treats equally and promises one third of his kingdom. Unfortunately, this causes conflict in the kingdom because custom dictates that the first born son should inherit the entire kingdom.

Inequity as the OS Problem:

  • A king has a pair of twin sons, one of whom he dotes on and the other he ignores. Unfortunately, the less likeable son is the king's favorite, which causes a rift in the country because the majority favors the other son.
