I noticed in the program that when you select the Overall Story Concern it automatically makes that same item the Overall Story Goal. Why is that? If I was concerned because I didn't have enough money, wouldn't my Goal be to get a better job. Or if I was concerned because I wasn't happier in my marriage wouldn't I do something to fix the relationship? In other words how are these two appreciations tied together? |

In addition to Jim's answers, with which I agree, there is quite another aspect to this question. Concerns and Goals are different story points, though there are similarities including sharing the same structural item, e.g. Obtaining or The Past, etc.
Then there is the matter in the software where the structural item that is the Overall Story Concern is always the Story Goal. This was done intentionally (see note below*). The main reason we did this was because most audiences identify the protagonist and antagonist and other characters found in the Overall Story throughline to be associated with the Story Goal. You can make another throughline Concern appear to be the story goal by emphasizing the Concern in that throughline and de-emphasizing the Overall Story throughline in general. The audience may assume that the more prominent throughline's Concern is the Story Goal. More likely, they'll just see the emphasized Concern as the goal in that throughline, such as a Main Character goal, or a Relationship throughline goal. So, while I would not suggest you think of Goals and Concerns as being the same, it is good to understand that they share structural bonds with the Dramatica model of story structure.

Chris, I would love to hear you expand on the bias at some point, or point to a story that doesn't fit the mold.

Actually you'll notice that the two examples you've given are of the same Type. In the example of a Concern over not having enough money, that sounds like a Concern of Obtaining -- a focus on what is missing or what has been lost. Getting a Job might be a Requirement to solve the final Goal, but that Goal will still be Obtaining -- getting more money. In the second example, an unhappy marriage seems close to a Concern of Subconscious (or Innermost Desires). Bringing happiness back to the marriage -- essentially fixing the relationship -- would also be a Goal of Subconscious. The Concern, or Type level, is closest to Plot and thus is probably why the focus of the effort to solve the problem will be found there. Inequity is all over the model -- Goals are simply found at the Type level and why they share an association with Concerns. |
Strange that I'm answering my own question, but occasionally I'm asked questions that I think others would be interested in knowing the answer to. This is one of those times.
